Classwork/homework/retesting/grades

  • Recommended homework will be on Canvas and on the Mega Awesome Study Guide. You should study as much as you need to earn the grade you desire!

  • Homework is assigned/suggested but not graded.

  • Retesting is mostly based on growth over time. I’ll explain more soon.

  • I quiz/test frequently so you don’t fall behind.

  • I will sometimes grade your classwork, especially when the class is a bit distracted, as a reward/encouragement for using class time productively.

This is important!

It is your responsibility to take notes in a manner that is useful for your learning and to remember what happens during each class period. I will fill Canvas with all sorts of study tools and information about what happens in class. However, I will not provide a carbon copy of my lessons. This is a deliberate choice. Summarizing what you’re learning is one of the most valuable learning tools!! If you’re absent, talk to me, take a picture of notes from a friend, and read what is on Canvas. Learning is more powerful when it happens in a community of learners, working together in an environment that is positive and supportive. Plan on learning in class every day–that is where you will learn the most.

Your Book

Stats: Modeling the World, by Bock, et. al. It is very well written and readable. I encourage you to read it. The book is on Canvas for your digital convenience. (You can check a copy from the library.) Read it. Practice problems will be on Canvas and on the Mega Guide. All answers are also available via this link.

Calculator

A graphing calculator with statistical functions is recommended but not required. This year, for the first time, Desmos will be allowed on the AP exam, and therefore will be allowed on all tests. And frankly, the Desmos interface is better than any calculator. NumWorks are amazing if you want to buy a calculator that is a lot like Desmos. Here’s a link for $10 off, purchase by 8/15/25. The library has calculators for checkout if you lack the funds for a purchase. If you already have a calculator, I will show you how to use it and you can choose if you prefer Desmos.

 Tutoring

The best time for tutoring is on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. I arrive on campus at about 7:30am. If you need more assistance than these times, please let me know.

Email

I encourage you to use email (Canvas or Outlook, either is fine, jared.derksen@cjuhsd.net for Outlook) to communicate. You don’t have to apologize about sending email late at night! I check it when I’m ready to work and you won’t wake me up. Informal style is fine. Just let me know what you need help with.

Phone Policy

Phones will be put away, all period, in your bag/backpack, unless I specifically state otherwise. Having your phone at the whiteboards is even more strictly forbidden!!

Careers

Students will improve their career preparedness. Most obviously, through learning to analyze data and scientific research. But also, by learning to present to others, use technology appropriately, and much more. People who can do statistics have an advantage when applying for jobs!

Website Resources

You will need to log into myapcollegeboard.org to complete assignments. Please know your log-in credentials for this site. This log-in should not use your school account. You will also need to maintain a Khan Academy account and a StatCrunch account, using appropriate log-in credentials. See the Resources Module on Canvas for these links. You will use this module all year long to access useful links.

Academic Dishonesty

I will enforce the RCHS academic integrity code. Duplicate work will result in zeros for both parties. Plagiarism and cheating will receive a zero. Your counselor and all your teachers will be informed of any violation. The GATE/Honors policy will also be followed. AI guidelines will be clearly explained when projects are assigned. If you use AI to say something that I haven’t taught you and that you can’t demonstrate that you understand, you will receive a zero for the assignment.

Read, write, discuss

We will read an article with “real life statistics” about once a month. You will be expected to read carefully, actively participate in discussions, summarize and reflect about the statistics in the material. These assignments will be worth 10 points. First semester I have scheduled 4 articles, all due on the 3rd Thursday of the month. These assignments are all together in the Article Module.

Make-up Assessments

If you are absent for a quiz, the make-up quiz will either be the very next day or your next test score will be used to determine your quiz score. The choice between these two options will be mine.
If you are absent the day of a test and you have not been absent on any day prior, you will take the test on the day you return. If you have been absent for more than one day, it is your responsibility to schedule the time and period of your make-up test in a timely manner.

At my discretion, you may be given a special Form C for any assessment that you miss. This form will be secure. That is, you will not be allowed to take this test home after it is graded.

If you fall too far behind, I will use a test that is later in the semester and cumulative to replace any missing scores. We take two cumulative midterms during the year. Those scores are very helpful in my determination of your level of learning.

Day 1 Homework: Read this document, read the first 4 pages in chapter 1 of your textbook and watch this video.
